You have probably heard a crocheter, or even yourself, say that they are not good at reading crochet charts, and never remember the symbols. But today we will show you that symbols are our friends. Here below we made a list of the most common crochet stitches, with a brief explanation, and a video to make it easier for you. No more not knowing how to read charts! 😉
Chain

Slip stitch
To make a slip stitch, insert the crochet hook into the stitch indicated in the pattern, yarn over, draw yarn through the stitch and the loop on the hook.

Magic ring
To make a magic ring, wrap your index finger and thumb with the tail of the yarn to create a loop. Insert the crochet hook into the center of this loop, yarn over the hook with the strand coming from the skein and draw it through the loop. You will have one loop on your hook. Next, yarn over the hook again with the strand coming from the skein and draw it through the loop on your hook to close the ring. The magic ring is formed. Work the stitches as indicated in the pattern into the magic ring.

Single crochet
To make a single crochet, insert the crochet hook into the stitch of the previous row as indicated in the pattern, yarn over. Draw yarn through chain and up onto the working area of the crochet hook. You now have two loops on the hook. Again, yarn over and draw yarn through both loops on the crochet hook. To start a row in single crochet, you need to chain one.

Half double crochet
To make a half double crochet, yarn over and insert the crochet hook into the stitch of the previous row as indicated in the pattern. Yarn over again and draw yarn through chain and up onto the working area of the crochet hook. You now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over again and draw yarn through all three loops. To start a row in half double crochet, you need to chain two.

Triple crochet

Yarn over again and draw yarn through chain and up onto working area of the crochet hook. You now have four loops on the hook. *Yarn over and draw yarn through the first two loops on the hook*. You will have three loops on the hook. Repeat from * to * until you have one loop left on your hook. To start a row in triple crochet, you need to chain four.

Increase
To increase a stitch, work the same stitch twice. This means work two stitches into one stitch.

Decrease
To decrease, you have to close two stitches together as if they were one.
