Today we are going to show you a technique to make granny square very different than those we are used to seeing. It’s made using chains, single crochet, and double crochet, and is easy enough to make even if you have only a little experience with crochet.
Let’s see how it’s made.
Circle 1: Chain 10 and join the first and last chains with a slip stitch to form a circle. Chain 3 and single crochet 23 into the circle. When you finish, make one slip stitch into the third chain from the start, finish and weave in the ends.
Circle 2: Chain 10 and pass them through circle 1. Join the first and last chains with a slip stitch. Chain 3 and double crochet 23 inside the new circle. When you finish, make one slip stitch into the third chain from the start, finish and weave in the ends.
Circle 3: Chain 10 and pass them through circle 2. Join the first and last chains with a slip stitch. Chain 3 and double crochet 23 inside the new circle. When you finish, make one slip stitch into the third chain from the start, finish and weave in the ends.
Circle 4: Chain 10 and pass them through circles 1 and 3. Join the first and last chains with a slip stitch. Chain 3 and double crochet 23 inside the new circle. When you finish, make one slip stitch into the third chain from the start, finish and weave in the ends.
Square: To make the square frame around the circles, make a slip knot, insert the crochet hook through any of the stitches and bring the yarn to the front. Then make 1 chain stitch. Now you have begun using a new strand.
Let’s start by making one of the corners. Single crochet 1, chain 2 and single crochet 1 into the same stitch. Chain 5, skip over 5 stitches and insert the hook, first through one of the stitches of the circle above and then through the sixth stitch of the circle below. Single crochet 1. Chain 5, skip over another 5 stitches and make another corner (single crochet 1, chain 2, single crochet 1 in the same stitch). Chain 5, skip over 5 stitches and rejoin the circles in the sixth stitch. Work this way all the way around.
When you finish, slip stitch into the first corner. Chain 4 and to finish make a row of double crochet as follows: in the corners double crochet 1, chain 1, and double crochet 1 into the same stitch. On the sides, double crochet 6 in each hole created by the chains of the previous row. When you finish the row, slip stitch 1 into the third chain from the start, finish and weave in the ends.
As you can see, this is a very original granny square and is pretty easy to make. Just be careful that the circles do not turn around and remain with the right side facing. If you have difficulty distinguishing circles, you can use colored markers in each of them.
The result is very pretty and can be combined to make typical granny square projects with an original twist.
