This is one of those spectacular crochet stitches that look exceedingly difficult and tedious but are just the opposite! Making gathers is just as easy as crocheting single crochet, so why not give it a try!

It is a multiple of 12 stitches.

Cast on the required number of chains and one more in color A. Start working on the stitches starting from the second chain after the crochet hook.

Row 1: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Make a chain at the end and turn the project around.

Row 2: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Change to color B at the end, make a chain  and turn the project around.

Row 3: repeat row 1.

Row 4: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Change to color C at the end, make a chain  and turn the project around.

Row 5: repeat row 1.

Row 6: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Change to color D at the end, make a chain  and turn the project around.

Row 7: *make 6 single crochets, insert the crochet hook between rows 1 and 2 from the front to the back, wrap the thread around the hook and pull it out of the stitches. Complete the single crochet in its original place, at the height of the other stitches in the row and make 5 single crochets*, repeat from * to * until you have completed the row. Make a chain and turn the project around.

Row 9: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Make a chain at the end and turn the project around.

Row 10: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Change to color B at the end, make a chain  and turn the project around.

Row 11: repeat row 1.

Row 12: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Change to color C at the end, make a chain  and turn the project around.

Row 13: repeat row 1.

Row 14: make a single crochet in all the stitches. Change to color D at the end, make a chain  and turn the project around.

Row 15: *insert the crochet hook between rows 9 and 10 from the front to the back, wrap the thread around the hook and pull it out of the stitches. Complete the single crochet in its original place, at the height of the other stitches in the row and make 11 single crochets*, repeat from * to * until you have completed the row.. Make a chain and turn the project around    .

Row 16: make a single crochet in every stitch. At the end change to color A and turn the project around.

Repeat these rows until you have reached the desired length.

In order for this type of stitch to look perfect it is very important to always pull on the thread to pull it out of the stitches of the row before. That way we achieve a look similar to honeycombs because the stitches lie slightly on top of each other. Combine different colors to make it look even better! It looks great on bags and remember that really all you need to know is how to make single crochets.

To crochet gathers, we used a 5MM crochet hook and the cotton in navy blue, natural, salmon and gray; the options are endless!
