How to crochet Starburst stitch

In this post we are going to learn how to crochet Starburst Stitch.

It is quite an advanced stitch that seems quite complicated on first sight but it is only a question to get the rhythm.

The number of stitches has to a multiple of 8 +1.

Row 1: skip 4 chains, *crochet 9 double crochets into the next chain, skip the 3 following chains, crochet 1 single crochet in the next chain, skip the 3 following chains*.

Repeat from * to * until you have completed the row and finish with a single crochet in the last chain. Turn the project around.

Row 2: crochet 3 chains, skip the first single crochet, crochet 4 double crochets together in the next 4 double crochets, *crochet 4 chains, crochet 1 single crochet into the next stitch (it is the stitch at the center of the 9 double crochets together in the previous row), crochet 3 chains, crochet 9 double crochets together into the next 9 stitches*.

Repeat from * to * until you have completed the row and finish the row with 4 double crochets together in the last 4 stitches of the previous row and the last chain. Turn the project around.

Row 3: crochet 4 chains, crochet 4 double crochets in the center of the 5 double crochets together of the previous row, *skip the 3 following chains, crochet 1 single crochet into the next stitch, skip the next 4 chains, crochet 9 double crochets in the center of the 9 double crochets together of the previous row*.

Repeat from * to * until you have completed the row and finish with 5 double crochets in the center of the 4 double crochets together of the previous row. Turn the project around.

Row 4: crochet 4 chains, skip the first double crochet, *crochet 9 double crochets together into the next 9 stitches, crochet 4 chains, crochet 1 single crochet into the next stitch (the stitch in the center of the 9 stitches of the previous row), crochet 3 chains*.

Repeat from * to * until you have completed the row and finish with 1 single crochet into the last stitch of the row. Turn the project around.

Row 5: make 1 chain, skip the first stitch, *skit the following 4 chains, crochet 9 double crochets into the center of the 9 double crochets together of the previous row, skip 3 chains, crochet 1 single crochet in the next stitch*.

Repeat from * to * until you have completed the row, making a single crochet into the last chain of the previous row. Turn the project around.

Repeat rows 2 to 5 until you get to the desired length.

As you can see the thread forms little circles of double crochets. The result is a dense texture that is perfect to crochet winter clothes.

You can use it to make scarfs or blankets using thick wool.
