Today we are going to share with you a simple trick that can visibly improve your crochet projects. Particularly those made with the tapestry technique or that just have blocks of a contrasting color. Today, we’re going to show you how to change colors in crochet.

Have you ever noticed what happens when you try to add a vertical block of a contrast color to your project? Little-by-little the block of color starts to slant; despite making our stitches above the previous stitches, how maddening!

To avoid the diagonal stripes effect, you will only have to work all of the stitches in the row through the front loop. To do so, insert the crochet hook through the front loop of each stitch and then finish making the stitch as usual, like this:

It will also help you to achieve a tighter tension than what you usually work with.

Look at the difference between inserting the hook through both loops or with this little trick! In the swatch on the left we crocheted in the usual way and in the swatch on the right only through the front loop of each stitch. It looks like magic, but it isn’t.
