Let’s get started with the third installment of how to knit Entrelac! By now you are probably hooked on this technique, seeing how each square appears as your fabric takes shape is really cool. We are going to explain how to knit the second row of squares, this part goes a little faster than the first row because, at least at the beginning, the squares are knitted in the same way.

For this step-by-step explanation we used: size 11 knitting needles and one of our skeins of fine wool The Meriwool.

Before beginning, review the list of techniques you should be familiar with:

  • Knit
  • Purl.
  • Short rows.
  • Purl two stitches together.
  • Pick up stitches purlwise.

Remember that for our demonstration we are working with a multiple of 6 stitches, but you can do it with as many stitches as you like J

When reviewing the last step in phase 2 of how to knit Entrelac (first row of squares), our needles look like the photo below: the wrong side of the work facing you, with one stitch on the right-hand needle after making the left triangle, and the rest of the stitches on the left-hand needle. Let’s continue from that point J

First square of the row

Using your right-hand needle pick up 5 stitches purlwise along the side of the triangle (1 stitch for every 2 rows). Turn your work.

Now we will continue to work as follows:

Row 1 (right side): knit 6, turn your work.

Row 2 (wrong side): purl 5, purl 2 together. Turn your work.

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have finished with this group of stitches, or: until there are no stitches left to knit in this square.

Remaining squares in the row

Once you have finished this part, we will continue to knit the remaining squares in the row. They are worked the same as for the first square, but instead of picking up 5 stitches along the side of the triangle, we will pick up 6. For the first square we only pick up 5 stitches because we already had 1 on the needle. You will see it in the video and instructions below.

Using the right-hand needle pick up 6 stitches purlwise along the side of the triangle (1 stitch for every 2 rows). Turn your work.

Row 1 (right side): knit 6, turn your work.

Row 2 (wrong side): purl 5, purl 2 together. Turn your work.

Repeat the steps above to knit the number of squares needed to complete the row. In our example we made 4 squares.
