How to knit tic-tac-toe stich

Do you remember that game you used to play on paper when you were little? You made an O and your opponent an X, until one of you got three in a row? Well, this stitch is the same! X’s and O’s on a stockinette background; it can’t get more original than this.

Even though this stitch is knitted in 14 rows, it’s really easy to do, because you just have to know how to knit and purl. So don’t worry if you just started knitting, you’ll get the hang of it really quickly. 😉

Multiple of 12 stitches + 3 extra stitches. This stitch is not reversible.

Rows 1, 3, 9, and 11: knit all stitches.
Rows 2, 4, 8, and 10: purl all stitches.

Rows 5 and 7: *knit 3 stitches, purl one stitch, knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit 3 stitches, and purl 3 stitches*. Repeat from * to * until there are 3 remaining, knit 3 stitches.

Row 6: purl 3 stitches. *Knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit one stitch, purl 4 stitches, knit one stitch, and purl 4 stitches*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Rows 12 and 14: purl 3 stitches. *Knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit one stitch, purl 3 stitches, knit 3 stitches, and purl 3 stitches*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Row 13: knit 3 stitches. *Purl one stitch, knit one stitch, purl one stitch, knit 4 stitches, purl one stitch, and knit 4 stitches*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.

Repeat rows 1 to14 until you reach the desired length.

As you can see, you can create thousands of variations with only two types of stitches, knit and purl. Choose your favorite yarn and experiment with different materials to get very different results using the same stitch. This stitch would be perfect as the main motif for baby clothes or blankets!
